"Untitled", by Alexis J. St.Jeanos, collage, 8.5’x11’, 2014

This piece is the result of my digital design course assignment based on the “Anthropocence”. If you ask Wikipedia and other varying sources, “the Anthropocene is an informal geologic chronological term that marks the evidence and extent of human activities that have had a significant global impact on the Earth’s ecosystems”. The assignment required I choose an issue related to the Anthropocene discussion, and create a collage that represents either a Utopian or a Dystopian solution to the issue.

My project shows several of the very vibrant iPhone 5c’s collaged in a simple landscape composition. The pictures used to create my collage are actual images of the iPhone 5c in all the colors it is available. I didn’t have to simulate shine or create vibrancy because the phones already appear that way. These glossy pieces of plastic emulate the potential of digital animation as opposed to something existing in the real world: aka the driving force of this work.

Today, everyone, or at least it seems like everyone, has a smart phone of sorts. This sensational type of technology has ostensibly taken over every facet of human life. This work shows a world of fiction, just like the world our smart phones take us to when we focus so intensely on them. Despite the collage’s incredibly bright and flamboyant color palette, the piece is intended to be a criticism on contemporary human nature discussing the over abundance of such technologies, and the wasteful, non-recyclable materials used to create them.✨
